Privacy Policy

Web Clipper & Offline Reader for Chrome

1. Data Collection

SmartClip does not collect, transmit, or store any personal data on external servers. All data — including clipped pages, notes, highlights, tags, and settings — is stored exclusively in your browser's local storage (IndexedDB and chrome.storage.local).

2. Permissions Used

SmartClip requests the following Chrome permissions, each serving a specific purpose:

• activeTab — Access the current tab when you trigger clipping or reader mode.
• scripting — Inject content extraction scripts into the current page to capture article content.
• storage — Store license information and user preferences locally.
• contextMenus — Add "Clip this page" options to the right-click context menu.
• sidePanel — Display the extension in Chrome's side panel.
• unlimitedStorage — Allow IndexedDB to store large amounts of clipped content.
• tabs — Query active tabs for clipping operations.

3. License Verification

When you enter a Pro license key, SmartClip sends a single verification request to our license server:

• Endpoint: https://websnap-license.orangecc2025.workers.dev/verify
• Data sent: Product key (smartclip) and your license key.
• Data received: License validity status (valid/invalid) and type.

No personal information, browsing data, or clipped content is sent during license verification.

4. Content Extraction

When you clip a page, SmartClip:

• Reads the page's <title>, <meta> description, and article content.
• Captures the Open Graph image for thumbnails.
• Runs a simplified readability algorithm entirely within your browser.
• Stores the extracted content in your browser's local IndexedDB.

Page content is never transmitted to any external server.

5. Third-Party Services

SmartClip uses the following external services:

• License Server (websnap-license.orangecc2025.workers.dev) — For Pro license verification only (see Section 3).

No analytics, crash reporting, or tracking services are embedded in SmartClip.

6. Data Security

All your clipped content, annotations, and settings reside exclusively on your device. We cannot access, view, or retrieve your data because it is never transmitted to us. If you uninstall SmartClip, all local data will be removed with the extension.

7. Export & Data Portability

Pro users can export all clips as JSON or HTML files at any time. This ensures you always own and control your data. Imported clips from Chrome Bookmarks or Pocket are processed locally without external transmission.

8. Children's Privacy

SmartClip does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Since no data is collected, this is inherently satisfied.

9. Changes to This Policy

If we update this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
